Abstract

Launching an academic career offers exciting opportunities for early career faculty. The benefits include access to resources, opportunities to collaborate with other scholars in teaching and research, and the ability to begin new, cutting-edge research in your field. In this chapter, we will provide some advice for building momentum in all these areas. We focus on the value of career planning; executing this plan to secure early wins; seeking synergy between research and teaching; building a record of research publication and gaining exposure; and embracing serendipity and keeping an open mind about unexpected opportunities.
