Identification of structural damage severity using an inverse wave analysis

Abstract

A model-based identification technique is proposed for invisible damage in structures, based on time-dependent measurements at discrete points in the structure, and on solving an inverse problem using an optimization method. The structure is discretized using the finite element method, and time stepping is perform using the Newmark-Trapezoidal scheme. This technique enables damage severity identification with a sufficient amount of coherent data from a small number of sensors, and with reasonable amount of measurement noise.
