Abstract

Dielectric barrier discharge actuators were evaluated for performance enhancement and noise reduction on the blades of a model helicopter. Results show that hover efficiency can be maintained or increased with increased rotor thrust. Simultaneously, broadband and tonal noise was significantly reduced. A system study, based on dimensional analysis, showed that a rotor diameter larger than approximately 1.5 meters is required to achieve an energetic break-even point.
