Abstract

The solution of the wave equation for dipole and quadrupole sources is used to develop a new model of an actuator surface. Unlike the well-known momentum-Theory model, which describes the axial induced velocity through the actuator surface and in the far wake, the results of the new model describe the entire flow field induced by the actuator surface. The results obtained using the wave-equation actuator surface model are compared to those obtained using the momentum-Theory model. The compared variables include the induced velocity through the surface and the induced velocity in the far wake. The new model is efficient, easy to apply, and for a wide range of parameters shows good agreement with the momentum-Theory model.
