Abstract
Solutions are given for the performance of gas journal bearings containing one forward and one backward facing step. The height and location of the steps were optimized so as to yield maximum load capacity. When compared with an equivalent conventional bearing the optimized doubly stepped bearings show a gain in load capacity of up to 100%. The effectiveness of using a stepped geometry is highest with low eccentricity and high compressibility number LAMBDA .
