Abstract
The short history of the construction and demolition of the New Gate to the Old City of Jaffa gives a good indication of the rapid changes to Jaffa’s urban landscape during the second half of the nineteenth century. Because this history is generally unknown, an arched passageway known as Abulafia St., off of Yefet St. (Figure 9.1), is often mistakenly referred to as the New Gate of the late Ottoman City, which was unfortunately destroyed.
